A UTRGV FNP student logs 224 hours in NURS 6612 and 336 in NURS 6613, at 16 and then 24 hours a week, with smaller 45-hour pieces in health assessment, health promotion, rural health and NURS 6347, where two master's-prepared NPs at two different sites are required. Every site has to be approved by UTRGV before a single hour counts, and a site that is not already affiliated needs an agreement that can take 30 to 90 days.

Do UTRGV nurse practitioner students find their own preceptors?

For the FNP courses, yes: UTRGV's current syllabi say students arrange their own preceptors and clinical sites, choosing from an approved list or requesting a new site. The PMHNP certificate's sources differ, and the PMHNP placement assistance guide sets them side by side. Either way, we find the preceptor with you.

What exactly do you do for a UTRGV student?

We find preceptors who fit your UTRGV course and its rules, near where you live, and gather the details UTRGV's Clinical Request Form, affiliation agreement and preceptor agreement need. If a preceptor backs out, we start on the next one straight away.

Does my preceptor have to be on UTRGV's approved list?

Only university-approved sites count. A site already affiliated with UTRGV is the quickest route; a new one goes through the Clinical Request Form and an affiliation agreement first. The approved list guide explains both paths.

How many clinical hours are in UTRGV's FNP program?

The three FNP specialty courses carry 605 hours in the catalog: 45 in NURS 6347, 224 in NURS 6612 and 336 in NURS 6613. Health assessment, health promotion and rural health add 45 each, per their syllabi. The clinical hours guide shows every figure.
